Degenerate Art Ensemble  makes performances inspired by punk, comics, cinema, protest, nightmares and fairy tales driven by live music and their own style of physical theater and butoh inspired dance. They combine projected imagery with the movement and sound to create new mythologies, revealing other dimensions, challenging reality in a multi-dimensional story telling experience. The group has show their work throughout North America and Europe known for their large scale dance and theater projects and site transforming experiences. The group’s recent collaboration Boy mother / faceless bloom, performed at New York Live Arts received a Bessie Award for Outstanding Composition and Sound Design. Haruko Crow Nishimura is the artistic director of Degenerate Art Ensemble (DAE). She is a generative interdisciplinary artist and is always searching to discover how art can create deeper connections and awakenings. Her style of movement is informed by her practices of physical theater, sculptural costume/material interaction/experimentation and Japanese Butoh dance. She strives to excavate the dark corners of humanity, inventing new mythologies, telling stories that reveal hidden powers, confront demons, and ultimately find healing. She is a recipient of the Dale Chihuly Foundation’s Artist Trust Arts Innovators Award, Creative Capital Award and is a Guggenheim fellow. Highlights of her work with DAE include a commission from director Robert Wilson to re-interpret his iconic piece Einstein on the Beach and a solo dance as part of Anna Halprin’s 95 Rituals. Her recent work has been performed at the Spotlight USA Festival in Bulgaria, the International Festival of Contemporary Dance in Mexico City, the Hans Christian Andersen Festival in Denmark and New York Live Arts.

Joshua Kohl is the composer, musician, creative producer and music director of Degenerate Art Ensemble. His approach to music is dedicated to the exploration and proliferation of genre-free music making, from classical instruments to electronics and new inventions - with a goal of reaching the hearts and souls of the listener through vibrational resonance. He was the recipient of a Creative Capital award, Music Theatre Now! award (International Theatre Institute) and most recently received a Bessie Award for Outstanding Composition and Sound Design. His work for string quartet and voice was performed by the Kronos Quartet for their 40th anniversary concert. He is also a passionate conductor of the music of his peers.

Cindy Sibilsky, Tour Producer

A lifelong performing arts professional, Cindy Sibilsky is the founder/CEO and producer of INJOY Entertainment LLC (established in 2011), a multimedia, multi-genre, multi-purpose arts and entertainment company focused on meaningful cultural exchange worldwide. She is a creative and independent producer, marketing/PR director, and writer/journalist with 20 years of experience working on Broadway (Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance), Off-Broadway, and US and international touring productions and worked with prestigious venues such as Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), La MaMa ETC, New York Live Arts, Le Poisson Rouge, Roulette, National Sawdust, Museum of Moving Image, Rubin Museum, Jacob's Pillow and HAU1 (Berlin), among other notable venues, universities and partners. In 2019, she was a guest editor, curator, and lead writer for American Theatre Magazine’s special edition on Japanese Contemporary Theatre and has over a hundred published reviews and features on global performing arts, translated into several languages. Through INJOY Entertainment, Cindy represents an eclectic and constantly growing roster of NYC, US and international clients, companies, and shows, including dance, theatre, festivals, musicals, cirque, plays, poetry readings, cabaret, drag, concerts, curated art shows, public art, film screenings and immersive performances. Current and recent projects and companies include Prehistoric Body Theater, Hari Krishnan's ROWDIES IN LOVE, Compagnia de' Colombari, New York Arab Festival, Black Broadway: The Early Years, Drag Cosplay Artist Oriana Peron, Raizes Teatro, DRUMSTRUCK, Constanza Macras' DorkyPark Open For Everything, The Mulberry Tree, Degenerate Art Ensemble and more. Scenic design includes 3 large custom cut scrims, three mobile circular projection screens and an origami folding house that is also mapped to projections.

Then entire set is currently stored in a 5’ x '5’ storage closet. No elements in the set have parts that are longer than 6 feet when broken down. Ideal stage size is 46 feet wide 30 feet deep and 24 feet high, but scrims can be adjusted. The show works equally well in black box or proscenium.
